This past session, the Vermont Legislation passed an act that will seek to redefine school districts. At the heart of Act 46 are two major goals: creating equal educational opportunities for students statewide, and a more efficient use of our tax dollars to help control the rising cost of education.
In order to achieve these ideals, the state is requiring that smaller school districts unify with other districts. Based on our student population, Georgia will be required to join with one or more districts that we feel share our educational and economic point of view. This decision will impact everything from how our town is represented on a school board, to high school choice, to the way we want our money spent.
Since choosing the right school district to unify with is going to be extremely important, the state is providing grant money to support exploratory committees, and Georgia is taking advantage of this with Fletcher and Fairfax. We are looking for two community members to join school board directors Carl Laroe and Ben Chiappinelli on this three-town committee that will be shaping our future.
If you are a Georgia resident and would like to be a member of this committee, please submit a brief written letter that gives a little background on yourself and your interest in helping shape this unification. Applicants are encouraged to then introduce themselves in person at the next school board meeting on Tuesday, November 3rd, where the final two committee members will be chosen by the board. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, October 28th.
Applicants should expect an average of one-two evenings a month for at least the next year.
Please email letters or questions to email@example.com or you can mail them to Ben Chiappinelli
