About the GEMS Learning Center

Our Learning Center was built in 1991 as part of a large GEMS renovation and building project.  Mrs. Leyden, our current librarian, was able to work with the architects in designing an attractive space to house the Learning Center collection and to provide a pleasant working space for students and staff.

Mission and Goal:  The mission of the GEMS Learning Center program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This is done:

  • by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in a variety of formats to GEMS students and staff

  • by working to stimulate interest in reading, and using information and ideas

  • by collaborating with teachers to meet the needs of students

Hours: The GEMS Learning Center is open for use of the morning K and 1-4 students from 8-2:15 and for the use of the 5-8 students from 8:45-3:15. Students in grades 5-8 may use the Learning Center before 8:45 with a teacher's written permission.

Librarians: Mrs. Diane Leyden and Mrs. Linda Terrien

Library Aide: Mrs. Linda Strandberg

Library Collection - The Learning Center has a collection of over 15,000 books and over 38 periodicals available for our GEMS students and staff. We also subscribe to electronic resources for GEMS use.  In addition we have a collection of videotapes and filmstrip/cassette kits only available for loan to our staff.

Access to our collection - Our Learning Center uses the Spectrum Library automation program to provide access to our collection.  Currently our collection can be searched by Spectrum only from within the GEMS facility.

Internet Access - Students may apply for Internet access by returning a signed "Networked Information Resources Permission Form" available from the school office.
