Tier Two Vermont Science Initiative and Franklin West Supervisory Union Curriculum/Assessment Development for K-8 Teachers

A 4 credit, one-year professional development program focusing on science content, acquiring science-teacher skills, and improving general teaching practice.

 

On-site, Best Practices in Science Course (2 credits)

The outcome for the school year workshops will be the finalized course assessments for the K-8 Franklin West Supervisory Union Science Curriculum.

 

One-week summer institute(2 credits) in content-based science inquiry (examples of courses:  watershed/geology studies, landscape ecology, botany, physics) in June 2008.

Literacy in the Responsive Classroom, K-6

Participants will have an opportunity to apply the strategies of the Responsive Classroom approach to the teaching of literacy. They will discover ways to engage children with a broad range of learning styles and histories in active literacy learning.
Prerequisite: RC I

Social Studies in Action: A Teaching Practices Library, K-12

Blending content and methodology, the video library documents 24 teachers and their students in K-12 classrooms across the country actively exploring the social studies. Lively, provocative, and educationally sound, these lessons are designed to inspire thoughtful conversations and reflections on teaching practices in the social studies.

Best Practices in Teaching Mathematics, K-12

Learn research proven methods for promoting problem solving, invention, discourse, inquiry, challenge and achievement by all students. Participants will receive practical tools to support intensive reflection about students’ learning as a basis for instructional planning and decision making. There is no better course for becoming a better math teacher.
